1995, Mayotte, Taou et Sahil, deux jeunes comoriens, survivent de petits trafics. En rupture scolaire, voulant aider leur mère, ils n’hésitent pas à mettre leur vie en danger. Un soir, alors qu’ils s’apprêtent à quitter Mayotte à bord de leur embarcation chargée de scooters volés, des hommes s’en prennent à eux. Taou et Sahil sont alors victimes d’une violence qu’ils sont trop jeunes pour comprendre.
The film L’archipel aux parfums sought to offer a portrait of the Comoros. By following a day and a night in the lives of our two young protagonists, it was the archipelago itself that we evoked, the one we brought to the screen.
The story was set in Mamoudzou, Mayotte, but the shoot took place in France, in Marseille. It was therefore necessary to recreate an entire universe through location scouting, set design, lighting, extras, costumes, props, and makeup. The overall aesthetic had to remain naturalistic, as close to reality as possible.
